SD Barry attended Catholic school in San Francisco from 1949 to 1957. At age eighteen, he started an apprenticeship and spent eight years building ships in the San Francisco shipyards. While working, he attended San Francisco State University, earned a degree and teaching credential, and subsequently spent forty years teaching science in racially diverse high schools.
